Welcoming the Light

Posted in Inspiration, life, quotes, reflections by Linda on April 4, 2009

The contrast between light and darkness fascinates me. Without a doubt, our lives must consist of both, simply based on the fact that if there were no darkness, then we wouldn’t know the value of light. It’s a good thought to keep in mind when occasionally we have to work ourselves through some rough times.

But even though rough times do occur in everyones life, there is another  important thought that should also be kept in mind: That we always have a choice how to respond to those twists and turns of life. We can always make a choice to focus on the light.

Another winter has come to an end. Everything that has been frozen is melting and the miracle of spring unfolds in front of us. It occurs to me that somehow, it has been a very short winter. Of course, the number of days have been the same as any winter (and the amount of snow as well). Still, that’s what it feels like. And I think I know the reason why. Last summer, I made myself a promise: to keep my eyes on what’s truly beautiful in life, and focus on what really makes living worthwhile. I realized that when we start searching for sources of  joy and inspiration, gradually our lives begin to change. There is always a light shining somewhere. But to truly see it we have to focus on that light, and open up to the beauty life has in store for us.

Life is wonderful, in every way. But it’s true what they say; we do get what we ask for. If we stop filling our lives with what really matters, ignoring our dreams and visions, then eventually the darkness will take over and we end up merely existing instead of living. I know. I’ve been there.

So today’s thought is; Let us all allow ourselves – and each other – to be who we truly are, to live with honesty and humility for life, and welcome the light into our hearts.

Because when we do, something wonderful happens; We discover our own power to bring more light and warmth into the world, making us part of a very positive circle.

“Never fear shadows. They simply mean there’s a light shining somewhere nearby.” ~ Ruth E. Renkel

My Camera and I

Posted in photography by Linda on August 29, 2008

Among painters, it’s quite common at some point to make a self portrait. For those of us who are into photography, it’s not really that easy.. But at least you get a nice shot of your camera!

Although exciting things are going on in the Canon world these days, I must say I am still very content with my 30D.

I admit; if I was a millionaire, I probably would have been running off to the nearest store to upgrade my photo equipment. But I’m not a millionaire, and you know; that’s really not so bad. Having a good camera is important, if you really want to get into the challenge of photography (and I do need to save up for a few good lenses, that’s for sure) However, I believe really putting some effort into knowing your camera is equally important. And let’s not forget our most amazing tool ever; the one that never goes out of style – our eyes. The ability to “see” the world around us as if it was already captured on a frame; long before the photo is actually taken.

Over the years, as my interest in photography has grown, I have come to see the world in a different light. I see angles, colors and shapes in a whole different way. And that even applies to when I don’t bring my camera along (a situation I try my best to avoid..!)

I admit it; I’m in love. With my camera that is :o ) And I really look forward to the two of us spending even more time together in the future. Oh, and by the way,  – there’s something about the light outside today, so actually I have to go – I was planning on taking just a few more pictures before that light starts to fade – …

Such Warm Colors

Posted in photography by Linda on June 7, 2008

Those of you who love photography like me, will know how light is of the greatest importance. Sure you can adjust both colors and light after the photo is taken, but catching that special light while being out there with the camera always gives me a special thrill.

As most photographers would agree on, the best light is the one you get when it’s a bit cloudy and the shadows are soft. Still, I’m fascinated by the incredibly warm light just before sundown. This is what I’m talking about:

Even an old mill house window can be beautiful, being colored by the evening sun

A detail from mother nature

And another one

Just minutes before the sun sets:

It doesn’t get much warmer than this!
